Bhutan ramps up its solar ambitions

In the next two years, Bhutan plans to harness 300 megawatts of solar energy in order to diversify its energy sources, as the country currently depends on hydropower for nearly all its electricity generation.

The Department of Renewable Energy (DRE), depending on The Royal Government of Bhutan, with financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is going to pilot test the installation of small-scale solar photovoltaic systems in the marginalized rural households and integrate it into the national grid to enable them to produce energy for their own consumption while also creating income generation opportunities through the sale of excess power to the grid and introducing energy-based livelihood skills with a focus on women. The project will directly benefit 300 poor households in rural villages.

Mercados-Aries International supported by a multidisciplinary local team is accompanying and assisting DRE and Bhutan Power Corporation ((BPC) in the achievement of the objective assignment.
